Highland Park have launched a stunning 54 Year Old single malt whisky - the oldest to have ever been released by the distillery.

The spirit was distilled in 1968 before spending 40 years in a combination of refill butts and hogsheads, before being laid to rest in European Sherry oak casks in 2008 for its final period of maturation.

This release coincides with the distillery’s anniversary celebrations. Highland Park will be celebrating its 225th anniversary in 2023, and rather appropriately only 225 bottles of the 54 Year Old will be available.

Aesthetically speaking, the whisky also pays homage to the distillery itself and the island of Orkney as a whole. The bottle design draws inspiration from the distillery’s mash tun, while the Scottish oak presentation case has been designed to reflect the cliffs of Yesnaby on the West coast of the island.

Bottled at 46.9% ABV, the whisky promises notes of lychee, crushed cumin, coriander, and rich oak, with a soft, heathery peat note on the finish.

Those seeking out a bottle will need to part with £39,000. The whisky will be available from 23rd February through Berry bros & Rudd and The Whisky Shop. Buyers will also receive an invitation to visit the distillery for an exclusive tour.
